The New Balkans Institute is independent and established research centre and lobbying group that promotes

Individual and economic freedom and confronting the totalitarian past

We have successfully lobbied in favor of full restitution process. We are especially proud of taking part in public pressure and successful passing the 2016 compensation law for heirless confiscated Jewish property, the first such law envisaged by the Terezín Declaration of 46 states in 2009. We are offering basic info on research results or links on fully accessible journal articles. Documents on the returned property of Belgrade Jews through the restitution process are also available.

Full Western Balkans integration and Russian strategic challenges to liberal democracy

In public activities and individual research NBI offers scientific expertise and political arguments on behalf of regional (ex-YU) and EU-NATO integration and also closer cooperation with the UK and the former Commonwealth, and the US. We are engaged in production of two scientific journals, LimesPlus, and Acta Historiae Medicinae.

Research and creative interpretations of cultural heritage

Our personal or institutional engagement in international projects (Horizon 2020, COST, intergovernmental bilateral) includes research in urban studies (cultural history and identity of Belgrade). We also offer expertise in domain of possibilities that offer contemporary big data technologies in the area of urban development monitoring, including reconstructions of the cities’ material and imaginary histories (cooperation with Urban laboratory Belgrade).
